On January 23, 2023, a reporter used a special headset to watch a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Islanders. This new technology was created by
Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) and
Amazon Web Services (AWS). It gives real-time information from
NHL Edge, the league's tracking system. The project, called
SportsX, aims to make the fan experience better by combining digital data with the user's surroundings in real-time. It uses tracking, 3D models, and a video game engine for a more engaging sports experience.
During a test, the reporter saw virtual players on the Raptors' old practice court and got real-time player statistics. Another headset, connected to an app, let the reporter see player photos and stats while watching the game.
MLSE plans to give this technology to fans through their phone and app soon.
Christian Magsisi, MLSE's vice president of venue and digital technology, thinks it will be in homes soon.
The Raptors immersive experience uses cameras in the arena to track movement, letting users virtually replay past games. The technology can be used anywhere, showing different views. Even though it's still being developed,
MLSE believes in its potential. They think that this technology could help in assessing injuries and determining talent using advanced analytics.
